Usage of Cell phones in educational institutions

Usage of
cell phones habit affects students’ academic performance

“Students use this technology for cheating purposes. Some of the students
are very proficient in texting and use their proficiency to share answers of
objective type questions in exams and they do it unnoticed.”
In
the beginning the cell phones (one of the most popular and craziest technology
in the world) were just carried by elite class people, later it got popularity
all over the world in 1970’s. It reached in Pakistan in 1990’s and later, it
got appreciation by a number of inhabitants of Pakistan in 1990’s. Today everyone
out of three has a cell phone.
This
technology has casted a great impact on about every person’s life. It has
shortened the distances and made it easy to stay connected with friends and
family members wherever they are. Cell phones are quite useful in studies and
business. In both fields, the cell phone has become like compulsory gadget.
Students
can access internet on their cell phones while on the go, and thus can get
knowledge of any topic they wish to. The business persons can keep updated with
the markets up and downs can stay in touch with their employees and clients.
On
the other hand, it also has a number of negative aspects. It depends a lot on
the usage of this technology. It can be used to get benefits and fruits of the
technology or it can be used to spoil precious time and money. Majority of our
youth is misusing cell phone technology. Especially, the students of the age
are falling prey of its negative impacts. Students use this technology for
cheating purposes.
Some
of the students are very proficient in texting and use their proficiency to
share answers of objective type questions in exams and they do it unnoticed.
With
growing capabilities, cell phones are phones are found in the hands of many
college students. Cell phones are a constant source of class distraction.
It
is an estimated that the girl students spend an average of 8 hours a day on
their cell phones use posing potential risks for academic performance.
Some
students use their cell phones during the class lectures; they play video
games, they keep on texting messages during lectures, and even some time they
found guilty of disturbing their class. Due to the availability of a number of
features in cell phones, students waste a big share of their precious time in
social networking websites like Facebook & Twitter. They keep on updating
their status even in the classrooms without caring for the class.
It
can be used as a learning tool, but it is a pity that most of our students
using it negatively. Some researches show that it is also a source of
developing a habit of telling lies among students. Night packages are one of
the biggest sources of crushing moral values, causing mental and physical
disorder. No doubt, cell phone is a necessity these days but we should take
care of the negative points too and use this technology accordingly.
It is an estimated that the girl students spend an average of 8 hours a
day on their cell phones and boy students spend nearly 12, with excessive use
posing potential risks for academic performance.
Many
researchers are evident that the cell phones have greatly affected students’
performance in their studies. They are now more involved in unnecessary and
unhealthy activities than in the positive use of this widely accepted
technology.
I
oppose the unnecessary and unwanted usage of cell phones especially when school
going children or the students carry their cell phones in the classrooms and
even they keep them switched on. It not only creates disturbance, causes
distraction, but also leads to divert concentration of the whole class.
Perhaps, the unnecessary and unwanted usage of cell phone is one of the most
important elements or devices that crush the precious moments of a student’s
life.
Calling
to mind the judicious gap which has been mended by technology, it should be
noted that the usage of cell phones in students are not intended for negative
purpose and influence, however, the attitude and time channeled towards these
devices has enslaves the students, also young people between 15 and 19 admit
being addicted to their cell phones.
Also
scientists noted that more and more people are getting addicted to their cell
phones, causing stress and irritability. While specialists indicate that the
abuse of the use of cell phones could be typified as ‘a disorder of addiction
that has to be stopped as soon as possible.’
Reawakening,
to the recalcitrant mode of the student academic prowess in the academic ‘world’
there is a need to address the students prerogative in the society which serves
as issues in empowering them towards helping to the development of the society
which also address the issue of gender equality, if we are looking towards
positive changes in the society and development.
Thus,
without bringing the issues of mis-channelled time and energy towards things
that hinder the development of the students in the society, their picture seen
as “half baked” in most parts of the world will continue to thrive unabated,
thus creating more chasm between taking up roles and jobs left by the aged and
making the world a sustainable and a global village.
